Get the Job: Tactics for Success

My sister recently got a new job and I wanted to highlight some of the tactics she used to get the job because her employers told her after she was hired that some of the things that she did helped them decide to hire her. I think these are universal tips that will help job seekers no matter what career you're going into.

  •  Adjust Resume: She tailored her resume for the job she was applying for and highlighted skills that would be an asset to that job, rather than sending a general resume. 
  •  Mock Interview: She set up a mock interview and practiced her responses to commonly asked questions such as, "Why do you want this job?, "What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?, and give me an example of a time where you displayed leadership. Many schools have career counselors who can assist you with setting up a mock interview. Some even video tape the interview, so you can watch and perfect your interviewing skills.
  •  Research:  She researched the organization that she was interviewing with to make sure she understood the goals and vision of the organization. She also did some research on the persons interviewing her.  Sometimes you don't know who will be interviewing you, but knowing more about the company will help you adjust your answers to highlight the skills you have that fit in with the overall mission.
  •  Ask Questions:  My sister came prepared with some questions to ask at the end of the interview. Often the interviewers will ask you if you have any questions and being prepared helps show them that you are genuinely interested in the job and the company. Questions such as:  What does a typical work day look like, What are the skills and attributes you value most for someone being hired for this position? and What would you consider to be the most important aspects of this job? are great questions to ask.
  • Thank You:   After the interview send a thank you letter to your interviewers.  My sister prepared the envelopes prior to the interview so all she had to to do was write a message afterward thanking them for the opportunity and reminding them of some skills she had that would make her an asset to the company. 
The people who interviewed my sister were impressed with her professionalism and preparation. She also went on several informational interviews, which I also think helped with her interviewing skills.
